Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

I feel more confident in the capabilities of a robust 2x4 now and so I think I will put an offer in for the ex brinks 18t security truck pictured above. It really is quite amazing inside, I’ll be sure to post some photos if I bring it home.

The box is stronger than anything I’ve ever seen and looks like it would well outlive the chassis.

Internal modifications will be a pain given that everything is constructed from hardened plate steel but I have been offered a great price for it due to the fact that it is fairly useless for most purposes. The box is too small for anything but the heaviest cargo (gold bullion), the security systems have been removed so it is no longer useful as a top spec security truck, and the cab cut through means that it would be a difficult to return to chassis cab form. As a robust RTW motorhome it seems built for the job!

Look out for the guy in the most over-secure camper ever built.

Twin wheels

Hi, interesting conclusions, and perfectly valid.
I admit basing any truck choice more on feeling and emotion than on the practical reality discussed here (I haven't taken the plunge yet Quintin, more nest making...but goodness how I yearn to).

The following links to the builds of some well pimped 170D11 seem to imply that you can simply take off the inner wheel on a twin set. I supposr you would have to downrate the max vehicle weight...

Allrad-LKW-Forum -> 170D11

A lot of work went into those; makes you think that a Maggie isn't such a bad choice, Pity they're impossible to register in France

Weird, in the post, the links have the same title, they point to 2 different threads

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
