What camping gas?
Whats the most common type of gas and cylinder people take for trips through Europe and on into W.Africa? I understand Camping Gaz is available throughout Europe but what about Morocco, Mali, Senegal etc? Any advice gratefully received! Thanks, Jon

a big 11-13kg bottle can last 2-3 months. will you be gone from Europe longer than that ?

Thanks for your reply. We're going for 6 months in total so I expect 4 in Africa. Are the cylinders you carry calor or camping gas? I suppose I'm hoping to find places to refill en route thus keeping weight down.

I lashed out on a set of Autogas adaptors last year - 4 different types of thread for Europe alone. If you Google LPG adaptors I'm sure there will be someone close by to where you live.

I have an Autogas tank that supplies the cooker and fridge.

We used Gaslow refillable cylinders with a full set of LPG adaptors.

This lets you fill up at LPG points at filling stations, and then conventionally elsewhere..

Sudan has cheap LPG at its filling stations in Khartoum...

Thumbs up campinggaz
Campinggaz is widely availabe throughout West Africa, and beyond. All Francophone countries have Campinggaz. We circumnavigated Africa and crossed 30 countries with our blue 3 kg Campinggaz bottles. Never ran out of gas. South Africa and Namibia have a different standard but with an adapter, you can fill there too!

We're going through a similar problem at the moment. Soon to leave from Oz for our russian/european/african trip. We can decide on gas bottles. We have available to us a 9kg, 2 x 4.5 kg and 1 x 2.0 kg bottles. We will only use it for cooking, so i was thinking to get rid of the big ones (4.5kg and 9kg) and to get another 2kg, so whe have two smaller ones.

We need to carry it on our roofrack, so the smaller ones would be better for us. The only question is how long will a 2kg bottle last...in all our camping we've done so far, we've never actually taken note of how long it last...DOH.

Anyone with some rough and ready comsumption figures...we use a primus 2 burner stove.

how long does a bottle last
The 3 kg Campinggas bottles lasted on average 4 to 5 weeks each troughout the year of travel. We only used it for cooking on a 2 burner stove. We also used a Vulcano kettle now and then to cook water (to save gas). Some times we really had to look actively for gas filling stations to avoid 2 empty bottles but we always succeeded, albeit sometimes with a very narrow margin.

Two x 2 kg bottles do not seem enough to me. Maybe better to take 3 x 2 kg! The 2 kg bottles are easy enough to stash away.

Tom Sheppard did a test of camping gaz cylinders - I think 28 hours for the largest size - can't look it up as I (stupidly) lent my VDE copy to a, soon to be ex, friend. If you use one of the direct screw in burners, as opposed to a remote burner through a regulator, you will use more gas.

I just had this thought.. Why not take a small petrol or diesel powered burner as a backup ?
