I have killed my steel winch cable recently during some offroad recovery`s (of myself). Killed means it was harmed, 2 of these sub lines was glum.
(sample picture to show that a rope/cable consists of several lines)
So i had to consider if steel or a dyneema rope.
original warn steel rope (8mm) 30m: 50 Euro
dyneema (10 mm), 30m: 220 Euro
The amount of saved weight is pretty low, arround 4kg.
The dyema rope cause less damage if its broke. But it can broke when not propper used, where a steel rope goes damaged.
I did choose again the steel rope... But its your decision. For us travellers both looks good enough..
Always replace your rope/cable if it is injured, either how your decision looks like.
Here in this thread are some good hints: you need a propper recovcery kit together with your winch. A recovery kit who is rated for the power of your winch. Look that your car has propper recovery points.
Propper recovery kit means something strong
like pieces out of the TJM or Warn
heavy duty kits.. These small Shackles you can buy cheap anywhere will break if you go near the strength of a
4.5to winch (specially if you use a snatchblock).
With a smaller winch you can save weight with using a smaller recovery kit. But most travel setups of us 4x4 drivers are too heavy to choose these smaller winches....
If you plan to travel solo, i suggests also an ground anchor.
And for shure, it is helpful if you had tested your setup severall times before you had to use them during the journey.
For me it doesnt matter where you plan to travel, if you need a winch or not. It depends just on you. I have no problems to had to use a winch in the heart of europe...
