Woo-hoo!! I'm first - Ultimate 4x4 Trips

What would be your ultimate off-road trip?

I'm based in the United Arab Emirates, so we get to do some fantastic duning whenver we like, but I would love to drive across the Karakoram Highway from Pakistan to China - spectacular scenery, 'exciting' mountain tracks and a really remote area to explore.

What about you? How about sharing your ideas?

I’m pretty close to you (relatively speaking ) in Egypt. My dream 4wd trips?

1) Crossing the empty Quarter
2) Namibia Dunes.

I guess you can figure out that I’m in love with dunes as well .

For me it has to be London - Cape Town, if only because it seems a bit out of reach (time-wise). Otherwise I too would like to do the Empty Quarter.

Drive safely

I don't want to make you feel green with envy or anything , but we're off to Liwa (the Empty Quarter) on Thursday /Friday. Check out the web site in my signature shortly afterwards if you're interested.

Mitsubishi are lending me a LWB Pajero for the journey and I'm to write a piece about how the Pajero gets on. I'm hopeful that it may be published in the UK Magazine 4x4.

My normal vehicle is a SWB Patrol, so it should be an interesting experience.

Catch you later!

Hey Jon,
Just had a quick look at your website - it looks great out there.

Just out of curiosity - is it difficult to get your own (GB registered) vehicles temporarily imported into the UAE?

Cheers,
Nick.

If you mean whilst passing through the country, no it isn't difficult at all. You will probably need a carnet though. The people to ask would be the Automobile & Touring Club for UAE (E-Mail: atcuae@emirates.net.ae).

If you mean you plan to live here and you want to locally register the vehicle, forget it. RHD vehicles can no longer be registered easily. You have to 'know' someone at the traffic police to get that done!

Back in 1993 (yes I've lived out here that long!), I remember taking a pair of British lads out into the Wadis during the summer who were driving a British registered ex Camel Trophy Defender 110. They were driving round the world in it.

Hope this helps, if there is anything more you'd like to know, post it here or E-Mail me.

The Empty Quarter!! You lucky ..... (Kidding ). I would definitely like to check your article. Please tell us when it’s available.
I tried out the LWB Pajero in the Sahara and it’s beautiful. The engine isn’t as powerful as the 4.0 in my Jeep but it did the job well. On the other hand the Pajero’s suspension was very good, but it could easily get over taxed with heavy travel gear.

Good luck!

Hi There!

Got back from Liwa yesterday evening. The first photos (taken with a digital camera) are already posted on my site. Check out http://www.mid-east-off-road.com/ont....mv?0000000004

More photos and a write up will follow, but I have to wait for the slides to be developed.

The Pajero went superbly - no real worries at all. Although I know most of you Sahara people travel huge distances on your trips for weeks at a time, I work out here and have to report for duty this morning, so we can only cover a distance of say 150km or so through the dunes.

We did the first 80km using a sand track that formed part of the route for a recent UAE Desert Challenge Rally, but to make it more 'interesting' we cut across one corner of the route cross-country. Absolutely superb!

I'll keep you informed of when new material is on my site about it and also when I have news about the possible publication of the article in 4x4 Magazine of the UK.

Catch you later,

Hi Col,

Sharkey told me that you had been out with him in the desert and mountains. I wish I'd known you were here - it would have been nice to meet you!

I think that there are even better pics to come. I haven't had chance to get the slides developed yet, so I'm really looking forward to how they come out...

I've started the write up part of it now, but it may take a few days before I get that sorted out.

How to see you back in the Emirates soon.

Gday Jon,
I was going to try and contact you when we arrived, but we only had limited time in Abu Dhabi, and that was absorbed with the sandbags friends, we really needed a few more days, but next we time hit town it should be for a few years.

catch ya later

col campbell

PS Sharky has some good photos of your Liwa trip on his web site.

Yes I know he has. He very kindly sent me a CD of them and said I could use them on my site as well. I've put a few on and have finally got my own slides back.

Although I've only had one quick look through, I've seen some absolute crackers and I'm well-pleased with the results.

I'll post some of them over the next weekend.

The first batch of the slide photos are now posted on the site @
http://www.mid-east-off-road.com/ont....mv?0000000004

The scans that came back from the photo shop were not that brilliant and I'm having a Kodak Photo CD done of the best of them. I'll be posting some more over the coming days.

Later,

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
