If the belt is set up correctly with the later parts it is fine - over 150,000 miles on my 90 - 3 belts, no problems - (I change them every 50 thou ish miles)
The zues set up is noisey, not that dependable and as mentioned that money buys a lot of belts.
also it doesnt hurt to have a look at the front of the engine every 50 thou miles anyway and check your front seal etc.
There were around 25,000 Tdi's made each year since 1990 - so theres a lot of them about - they were used for all military wolfs, some exported rovers and used in KDKs in Brazil - even used in some Fords in South America it only went out of production in 2006 - it is a well proven engine.
A chain would be nice, yes, but get the belt set up correctly and its fine, also I only use genuine parts timing belts - (about the only genuine part I use!)
