Aussie selling bike in Europe - ADVICE NEEDED

Hi Everyone (or anyone),

I hope i have posted this in the correct place.

I'm an Australian, that some time ago purchased a Suziki GS500 in France. After much difficulty, i got it registered under two names, mine and a friends (for the purpose of using their residential address). I have since been riding the bike around Europe and will be doing so for the next few months.

My question is simply: How can i sell the bike? I will be ending up in Spain, so would love to sell it there before returning to Oz. Can i sell a french registered bike in Spain? Does the paperwork have to be filed in France? (if so, can it be done by post?) Does anyone know if both parties it is registered under need to sight/sign the paperwork? Are there spare parts dealers or used bike dealers in Spain that are interested in bikes (thinking it may be quicker than private sale)?

Its a 1996 model with over 88k kms (and more to come) so don't expect much € from it. But, it'd be good to have some money towards the LARGE airplane ticket to get home, and i'd like to see the old girl put to good use.

Basically, any advice from locals or especially travelleres that have previously bought and sold in Europe would be appreciated. i have tried looking for info on past threads, but can only find out about buying I will be coming to the UK HU meet, so if anyone going there has any good ideas, we can chat over a

Happy travels

Sell the bike in france. likely you wil get a better price and no hassles.. just sign teh 'carte gris' when you do. Then take a train to spain. there are no mot's or road tax for bikes in france, and it is a great place for biking, both in the roads available and public attitude.

Selling vehicles in France is a bit of a process now.

I'm not entirely sure, will check with the neighbours later if bikes are subject to a CT (MOT/WOF)

To sell, you need a CT that's no more than 6months old.
You draw two diagonal lines across the carte gris and between them write 'vends le XXX (Date)'
You go to the mairie of the commune that your carte gris is registered to (your friends address in your case) and pick up papers that should be filled in and a copy is given to the new owner.

Essentially you could do this from a 'remote' place if your friends can send you the papers. Whether you could do it from Spain I'm not entirely sure - certainly not if the bike is subjected to a CT, which you'll need to do in France.

Your other alternative is to re-register it in Spain, but then you'll need an address there & it will probably eat at some of your cash that you are trying to save for the ticket home!

Bonne chance

Kira

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
