buying a bike in czek republic

Hye,

I'd like to get one of these nice and old JAWA bikes in Prague. Some czek native already told me it would be easy and cheap to get one, but I just wonder about sorting out paperwork and insurance, registeration test... I'd like to bring it back in France, but would probably go around Eastern Europ before.

Does anyone knows about such paperworks, and especially french ones for a foreign bike?

Thanks for your help,
vince

I have 'imported' 3 vehicles into france from the UK. and people all told me different things...
It depends who u see when u do it...
you need an export certificate.. take that to local impot centre. t
they give u a form so you have to visit DRIRE so they can check vehicle is as described..
If not on their lists ( a fiat Tipo wasn't) you have to get a certificate of conformity from the importer.. if there isn't one you need to get a certificate of non conformity... as there are no control technique for bike not sure what happens, suspect they will test vehicle for emissions at drire. then u take all the documentation to the local prefecture to get a carte grise.
I strongly advise you go get an insurance quote in france before you do any of this.. they have list of 'conforming' vehicles.. try to have your vehicle identified as one on the list. it will save lots of hassle.

Thanks for the advises,
I've heard that if the bike is older than 25 years there wouldn't be any hassle for the emission or noise test, as it would be clasified as "collection".

I also wonder about the insurance, can you get a French one straigh when you get the bike, or do you have to get a local one until you get your registration in france?

Thanks,
vince

You can get insurance using your old original registration number. so you can use it until it gets registered in france. However you are likely to get a 3 month 'cover note' which is no problem to renew, until it is sorted. You can also get a 'control technique' which lasts for two years for a car/jeep etc. This means you can be away two years before the control technique expires ( MOT in UK parlance) Insurance can be renewed by post to your french address.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
