Casual adventure riding - YORKSHIRE UK
Now then....
Went for a nice mini adventure last week.
Checked out some of the back roads around Yorkshire and got a couple of 'Green Lane' roads in too.
Does anyone know of any other Green Lanes?
These are published on the NP authority websites, but most 'Green Laners' on the net seem to be very secretive about the roads in other areas... I see this as counter productive, because on a couple of occasions 'Green Lane' roads have actually been closed due to lack of usage...
These lanes are pretty easy going and you could easily take any bike across, including a gixxer if you really wanted.
The tarmac routes shown on the GPS tracks are are also a lot of fun on the smaller bikes.
There's a nice biker cafe at Hawes too.
Anyway, I wanted to publish the route but can't upload the tracks here. The Garmin, GPX and Google Earth files are available here.
Index of /~earmb
Remember these are intended to be adventure routes and as such, please leave the gates as you found them, take it easy around animals and above all don't litter (there seems to be plenty of that in Yorkshire already).
Send me your routes and I'll add them to the list.
Cheers

This is a reasonable site for finding alternative roads and tracks. Basically all you do is zoom in to a rough area and click the search button, it then shows all trails within 5k of where you are. I find it a usefull starting off point although I have no idea how up to date the site is kept.

trailwise
if you sign up to the TRF and pay membership, you get a logon password for a site called wayfinder. this sight was changed to being called trailwise. it seems you dont need a password any more!

I think that if you have a password the search area becomes bigger. i.e. 10k instead of 5k

The two letter reference that designates the grid square is missing.
While I am here, the Google Earth kpl files on the server, do you know what version of Google Earth they were made with, tried opening them last night and the end result was largely nonsense, or at least if they are supposed to be UK based trails they were.

Using this version.
Google Earth 4.3.7284.3916 (beta)
It's possible that something went wrong...
Try again.. Otherwise try opening the .gpx file in google earth that should work too....
File>open then change "files of type" field in open dialogue box
About those other grid refs.... does that mean I can't use them as they stand?
Cheers

I think so, picking one at random (062155) this on it's own isn't a grid reference, it needs preceding by 2 letters for example:
SE062155 gives you a location near Huddersfield
NY062155 however is a location near Whitehaven.
Maybe Tommy has or can get the letters also?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
