Holland to Nordkapp

Hi,

I am very roughly thinking about driving from the Netherlands to the Nordkapp this summer, but I have quite some questions still outstanding. Hopefully some of you can help. Considering we are generally used to longer driving days, but definately in to take it easy enough to enjoy the scenery, nice places, make some hikes, in short: to fully enjoy the country (Norway retour or Norway up and Sweden (faster) down):

1) how long would such a trip take?
2) how much EUR would we need on a daily basis (average); we are in for free camping as much as possible, but do love some luxury on the way and do like to visit the Lofoten, etc.?

Thanks a lot!

I did it in 2008, and due to the weather (it was really raining, all the time), I decided to take the E6 the whole way, and back via Finland/Sweden. For me it took 12 days all in all. Remember in Norway they take the speedlimit quite seriously.

Norway is expensive, that means everything is expensive, and the more north you get the more expensive it gets.

As for luxury, I would say that what you pay for a hut, is roughly what you pay for a cheap hotel in some of the cheaper countries in Europe - I remember that a hut is around 450-600 NKR (4 people sharing), probably more now due to inflation.

Norway is absolutely beautiful, but not cheap....

12 days from the Netherlands to the Nordkapp and back? That seems very fast to me; I thought it would take at least about a month if you would indeed like to visit some of the nice places (I do not yet know Norway, except for Jotunheimen, which I would love to visit again). Where did you take a ferry?

As far as I understand, free camping is allowed everywhere, so as long as there is no rain that would be perfect. When did you do your trip (considering your horrible weather - it sounds so bad...)?

I was at Nordkapp the 21/6 ... wanted to see the midnight sun. Of the 12 days I was on the road, I had rain for 8 days, and miserable cold (I had planned for more days, but the weather did not encourage it). But otherwise and experience.

In that part of the world you can only hope for good weather, it can change very very fast.

I did Puttgarden/Rødby and Helsingør/Helsingborg - I like ride my bike, not spend time on a ferry with drunk people

I did in in twelve days, from the South of the Netherlands to the NorthCape and back. You can read my travel report on http://jkrijt.home.xs4all.nl/trips/n2g/index.shtml

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
