Los Angeles to Europe
Hi, anyone have any advice on the best way and cheapest way to transport my bike (ST1300) to Europe and avoid (1) crating it, so that I can fly there, pick up the bike, and drive away, (2) have no hassle with customs re duty etc....My plan is to ride south along the western coast of France, then down to Spain, but I dont mind where I start from, be it Germany or wherever once I dont get hassle from the customs on landing the bike...I intend getting the bike insured by that company in Germany,, ADAC I think is their name....Happy Travels to all fellow bike nuts...

You should consider HU Bulgaria for your insurance needs.

Based on extensive research, the best price I've seen to ship a motorcycle from your area to Europe is with Schumacher Logistics ( International Car Shipping | Auto Transport | International Moving) for $490 via ship to many ports in Europe. In addition, from what I've read, one can expect to pay a few hundred dollars in port fees upon arrival. It takes about 30 days to reach Europe once loaded on the ship.
I left my KTM 990 Adventure with them last Friday and plan to pick it up in Rotterdam during the second week of July and ride through France, Spain, and Portugal on my way to Morocco. If you are interested in meeting up along the way or have any questions about the shipping process, don't hesitate to call my cell at 415-699-1003.

It will be interesting to hear your report after picking up the bike. Most here prefer air shipments, at least when leaving home, for various reasons. Many have had bad experiences with surface shipments.
Post back here. If it works, it's a cheap way to get it done.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
