Road works on approach to Georgian border near Posof - not fun!
Just a quick word to advise anyone planning on heading from north eastern Turkey into Georgia via Posof. We went though last weekend and found that of the 50km road over the mountains going north from Kars to Camilcatak, nr Ardahan, 40km has been dug up. It's a bit of an off road challenge at the best of times but when it's been raining for 2-3 days, as it had (and often does) it's more of a quagmire including a 3km stretch (on a steep descent!) of thick wet clay that negated our treads within a second of hitting it. Cue lots of falling off, extreme difficulty picking the bikes back up (we were falling over!) and almost being killed by an Iranian articulted truck that slid down the entire length with full brakes on only stopping 5 metres from us! The 40km took us just over 3 hours in the end, and ended any hope of making the border as it was dark and raining. We ended up camping next to a machine gun post at the junction in Camilcatak after a bit of negotiating before heading off on the morning. The road north to Posof from Camilcatak is lovely tarmac (for now!). This crossing is still perfectly doable but definitely adjust your timings accordingly! Fun and games!!!
