Studded Motorcycle tyres
I am heading to Norway and Sweden from the UK in January and am looking at getting some studded tyres for my Ktm for my trip. Does anyone know where I can get them in the UK or if I am better of trying in Norway (Bergen) when I get off the Ferry.

I have been there previously in a car and seen people on bikes running around. I thought i would definitely try it on the next trip.

And if anyone asks, yes I know it will be cold.

studded tyres
Hello!
You will for sure find studded tyres in Bergen. To get an Idea of the cost, chech out http://www.snellingen.no/

They are located in Oslo, but will give you a price range. From what I can see the cost is about 900 nok (Norwegian kroner)

Me myself am gooing to Africa mid february.

Hmmm, prices from Snellingen:

Antall = How many studs
Lengde = Length of studs
Pris = Price incl VAT (NOK)



Iwould recomend T644 Army special, it's the most legal one and it's great for mixed driving.
It might be smart to pre-order.

Thanks for the good info, thats great news that they sould be available fairly easily. I'll have a hunt around when i get to Bergen. There's a KTM shop there aswell according to the KTM web site.
I have heard of the trelleborg army tyres , which are probably what i am after.

I am heading out on the 28 Dec, and plan to see some fjords, the arura borialis and head up to nordkapp then down through sweden. See a few sites then back to Norway. Go thru Telemark and catch the ferry back to the UK from Stavanger. That's the rough plan and I'll just have to see what the weather has to say when I get there

Goood luck on your trip Joe. I see you like the cold as much as me. but I suppose Haakon has the right idea going somewhere warm in the winter, have a good trip aswell

I will be heading up through sweden in the last few days of jan, around the top of the pond, into the artic circle (aura if exceedingly lucky) and down through finland. if you in area, fancy a cold one???

Best of luck, at least you get the option of studded tyres, am quite envious, they dont do them for my tyres. the trelleborgs are the ones to go for from what i hear.

I take my hat off to you both for heading to the north at that time of year. It will be incredibly beautiful.

I'm a long way south of there now but still in Scandinavia -- basking in Denmark's mildest December for 240 years, they say. I even needed to fish out my sunglasses for a spell this afternoon!

Hope you get some of this unseasonably good weather too.

Actually, Joe, you might get studded tyres for your C90. We have some guys running around on studded scooters and mopeds here. What are the dimensions on you C90? I believe Maxxis make tyres suitable for studding.

I will be running 2.50-17, although 2.75-17 will go on the rim.
I have some catspaw style enduro tyres which coped well, but fitting some proper studded tyres in Norway may be a good idea,.

2.50 = 70/8017 I believe.

Am a bit annoyed that the ferry company have stopped sailing from 21 jan into the middle of feb again. I was assured a couple of months ago they would sail all of 2007. pah.

hence will be travelling 20th jan to bergen-savalentreffen-sweden-artic circle-talviralli (finland)-sail to Germany and back via rotterdam.

Hi Joe. I mailed you some info on this. A friend of mine, who has a workshop and does bike tyres, can have a couple of studded tyres shipped to you in UK.

Hope it works out. We don't want you to loose your grip while in Norway, do we?

Most of the ready-made studded tires I have seen like Trelleborgs have big spikes (thats what they are called in German) in them that stick out about 1-2 cms. These are fantastic for ice and hard snow. We have used them on frozen lakes and they allow you to lean into turns about as much as the race tires on a supersport.

However, for mixed conditions where you also have stretches of clear asphalt in between I would recommend normal automotive studs. These only stick out a tiny bit, and have a carbide tip that wears much harder than the ice-screw type mentioned above. They still allow good grip on snow but won't kill you if the road has been cleared.

I have heard you can get a small tool and studs for mountain bike tyres, I think riding to norway on studded tyres, there wont be any studs left in by bergen...
will be on tinterweb this evening tryin to find out.

No problem, most put in car type studs for them to last longer and for the tyres to be rideable also on asphalt.

If you check Trelleborg Army Special in my reply above you will see that it has studs suited for tarmac. (Length=1.5mm)
