Hello Orson,
you should try to get your Visa in advance. If you are going directly to an Ambassy, it should take araound a week, at least in Germany.
Much more important is a valid health insurance. Therefore it is necessary not having any kind of insurance. In Germany exist an agreement between the emmbassy and the Axa Insurance Company. This Insurance is aknowledge without any problems. Any other may couse problems and a delay with issueing the visa. You need a official certificate from your Insurance company.
I will give it a try on Monday in Hamburg with an Insurance from our Automoblie Club. If it is not working I have to sign a new one.
Good luck to you. If I have gathered further information about the visa issueing, I will keep ypu updated.
Keep smiling,
Jan
