1800 goldwing wheel wobble
just had a new front tyre fitted (Avon Cobra) and at 30mph have now got front wheel wobble,where the handle bars move slightly,over that speed all ok.
have had balance checked again and shows no problems

As far as I know its pretty normal. I had a press bike and it did the same thing. I let the air down a little and it cured it. Check the pressure on the front tire. I think I brought it down to 2.2 bar.

I had one of the early Gold Wings many years ago and that did the same thing. Nice to know that they've made progress!

Seriously though, as Steve0 says it's likely to be a tyre issue. I noticed more or less wobble with different makes of tyre and different degrees of loading on the bike (pillion, luggage etc). It was more of a niggle than anything as it was easily damped by gripping the bars.

I do (vaguely) remember some technical discussion in the bike press back then about the reason for it and advice being offered about the need to keep the head bearings adjusted and the merits of ribbed vs other tread pattern tyres. It's likely that the Avon you've just fitted has something in its construction that's not damping the wobble like the previous tyre did.

I'll probably be looking to buy an 1800 Wing in a couple of years for an extended trip with my wife and if it needs tyres I'll be sure to cross Avon off the list. As they say, it's an ill wind etc

The Avon Cobra is a replacement for the Avon Venom. The Venom is still made for large H-D tourers but not for Softails, etc. My mate fitted a Cobra to his 21 inch front wheel on his Softail and found the bike had developed a wobble in the 68 to 73 mph range. This wobble had not been there when using Venoms for nearly 15 years, it's the tyre design methinks.

I used to have several GoldWings and was a member of the GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Association)
They have a forum with a lot of discussion about this issue but I think you have to be a member to use the forum.

Tread pattern causes this on outfits, a central cut does it a lot more than blocks, cats paws and wavy lines that cross the re-cross the centre.

the goldwing 30 mph wobble
Several have told me the wobble is due to faulty steering head bearings. He just told me that with the 1800s, Honda went back to a bearing with plastic separating the ball bearings in the ring. He replaces them with all steel and problem goes away. I have had the wobble on an 1100 and a 1500 and a 1800. It isn't a big issue; more an annoyance, as I never experience it unless I take both hands off the handle bars (not like a front end wobble on a car, which is always there).
