hi
Well , I am crossing Africa with one of these XL600LMF . No single problem yet. The only thing is the drive chain which needs readjusting every few days . I am on my fourth Chain *and I am still in Cameroon*
other than that ... nothing . Not a single piston miss in 30.000 km .
If I would start the trip again I would do 3 mods to the bike>
1 install a smaller gear drive *14 teeth instead of 15 . There is no need for high speeds in Africa -most of the time in 4th- , but the bike loaded struggles sometime in deep sand . Lowering the gears would do wonders.
2 . Install a wind fairing at the front . Just a little piece of clear plastic reduces the wind noise and turbulence a lot . And given that you are *there* for long long hours every day .. It makes a hell of a lot difference
3 . Weld a bigger plate into the side stand. In sand , dunes , or simply dirt roads is very difficult to leave the bike up , as the small sidde stands sometime digs iitself in the ground with obvious consecuences . Just a square of metal of 10cm x 10cm does wonders !
and that is ... enjoy your trip .If you want to see some pictures of your bike in Africa ...
