The XR650L is the electric start version of the 600R not the 650R.
The 600R and the 650L are both aircooled, steel framed, 80's tech singles. The 650L has a more robust subframe and a few other bits as well as the electric start but essentially the two bikes are first cousins.
The XR650R has virtually nothing in common with either of them (other than the makers name ). It's water cooled with an ally frame and much more powerful than either of the older bikes. As you say, it's kickstart only and I've no idea whether a conversion kit is available. Other's may know but I've not heard of one.
Hope that helps

You can get an electric start conversion for the 650R but it's proper expensive and has dubious reliability.
If you can't start your's in two kicks then either your jetting or technique is out.. Or both
Mine was a pig too. I upped the pilot jet by one size as it's WAY too lean from the factory. It kicked almost first time every time after that.
MX boots are recommended if you like your shins

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
