problems with honda dominator( engine stall)

hi guys


I have a problem with my 1988 honda dominator. when is cold (few minutes after starting) he revs are low about 1000 rpm so i keep using the choke or throtle, to up the revs until the engine get hot and revs goes naturaly up to 1500rpm.

The problem is that it takes long time to warm the engine and during that time the bike stall frequently forcing me to ride the engin acelerated in revs to avoid that.

I ajusted the pilot screw few times, I have cleaned the carburator and change the stardard spark plug for the high performance ( iridium) one, but the problem is still there.



I don't know what else i can do, can someone give some advice?

I don't know about your bike so I will hestitate to try to diagnose what is going on: what I will say is that you should look through earlier threads in the Honda tech section - I did the same thing in the relevant section for my Yamaha a while ago and most of the answers were there to be read!


e.g. do a search for "dominator".

It's a bit of a wild guess but you should have a look at compression:
Valve clearance. Correct? Have they been found to be very tight recently and have they been reset? A valve / seat might be slightly burnt. Low compression results which lets the idle drop when the engine is cold. The idle goes up to normal as soon as the engine is warm. If you just turn the idle higher it will usually idle fine when cold but go too high when warm.
The same also happens when your piston rings are worn. Easy to recognize from pressure buildup in the crankcase and blow into the airbox via the breather pipe.
Engines with worn rings usually also burn oil (blue smoke)

Compression tests with the usual handheld testers are often tricky or impossible on singles due to automatic decompressors.
Engine rebuilders have plug ins which screw into the spark plug hole and pressurize the cylinder with compressed air. The engineer will be able to locate and evaluate a valve or piston ring problem without pulling the engine apart.
