I use an SS filter in my XR650L. I like it a lot, especially becuase I never have to worry about carrying spare filters or finding replacements. It's a very practical thing to have for travel.
As for how well it works - I can't say as I haven't done any scientific tests myself, but the manufacturers claim that they are much better than paper.
To clean, I sometimes use gasoline and swish it around in a clear empty jug of water or I rinse it in hot water and dish soap several times. I watch for metal particles settling out in the plastic jug and when they stop appearing, I then let it dry and reinstall.
