Colorado USA Travellers Meeting, July 12-14, 2013

We're back in Colorado!

The riding is just too good to miss... oh yeah and the people are great too!

So registration is now open for the Horizons Unlimited Colorado Campfire and Ride meeting, to be held July 12-14, 2013!
http://www.HorizonsUnlimited.com/events/colorado-2013

Our own Greg Frazier is the host for this event - muchas gracias! Greg has found a great venue, in the mountains, with camping along a nice creek. Plan is for Friday night 'chill and swill evening', with ride outs on Saturday and presentations Saturday evening. It's different from the usual HU Meeting, so read the page carefully - it's all about RIDING!

Thanks for anything you can do to help spread the word about the event. There is a poster that you can print off and hand around to local venues and bike shops too.

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/eve...2013poster.pdf

Volunteers to help out and Present also wanted!

As we count down the days, you can get the latest event updates by subscribing to this thread, (thread tools, subscribe) or 'Liking' the Horizons Unlimited page on Facebook.

Feel free to discuss the event on this thread!

Colorado Rocky Mountain High HU Campout - July 12-14, 2013

Horizons Unlimited is sponsoring a secluded weekend of the real thing: adventure travel motorcycles, globe riding destinations, motorbiking secrets, how-to, multimedia shows and fun.

HU has booked a private events center/campground for HU registered guests only.

Hundreds of adventure travel motorcyclists today are circling the world or are on extended journeys. Kawasaki, KTM, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Suzuki, BMW, even a Ural, FN and Vespa are out there, on the road looping the globe. Cuba, Burma, Russia, China, all formerly near to impossible to enter or pass through, have recently been transited by Horizons Unlimited members.

100 years ago a 21 year-old motorcycle adventurer first circled the globe. Using a 1912 Henderson motorcycle (four cylinders in line, 934 cc, one gear, and 7 horsepower) Carl Stearns Clancy marked the trail for others to follow: Ted Simon, Jim Rogers, Robert Fulton,… they rode over some of the original trails Clancy used to first circumnavigate the globe with on motorized two wheels. On June 21, 2013, modern-day adventure riders will finish a ‘round the world journey in New York City, celebrating 100 years of motorcyclists doing what many said was impossible: riding a motorcycle around the world.

$49.00 USD pre-paid or $59.00 USD at the gate is the entrance fee for one or both nights of sleeping on the ground next to a Rocky Mountain brook, in the kind of clean fresh air John Denver made famous. Free are the wild adventure travel multimedia shows each evening, schmoozing with hardened overland motorbike travelers who have tagged the ends of the earth, and tire-kicking about cooking and camping equipment, riding gear, which motorcycle is best, costs and how to cross borders with the right paperwork (or not).

The limited number of motorbike travelers and serious adventure riders will be meeting in Grant, Colorado, less than an hour away from Denver, to connect, share secrets, trade tales and make day rides on some of the acknowledged best roads, trails and tracks on the globe, over passes like the famed Independence Pass into Aspen. Or try some off-pavement adventures crossing Boreas, Guanella, Webster or Mosquito Passes.

The Plan:

Check-in anytime after 3:00 PM Friday, July 12. Evening milling, chilling, cooking, ride-out to dinner nearby, and possible multimedia show(s)

Saturday, July 13: Riding, groups or solo.

Saturday evening: Cooking, chilling, ride-outs to dinner nearby, and presentations and multimedia shows after 7:00 PM until?

Sunday: On the roads, around the globe or general wandering journeys.

This HU Campout has been designed as an adventure in overland travel, “not the made-for-TV advertising or marketing fluff". It will be a one-time private party, a Colorado Rocky Mountain High.

Another nice thing about this rally is access to the Colorado off road passes. I am intending to do some of the easier ones. If someone wants an intro to off pavement let me know when you get there. I am the guy with the white F8oo GS NV plates. Dave

I'm looking forward to riding to Colorado, again. BUT, I'm also keeping an eye on the forest fires in Colo. and the firefighting efforts. The event is only four weeks away.

So far, the fires are staying to the south and the east. Let's hope it stays that way. Although it is hard to find an area that is not hazy with smoke.

I will have an almost new bike for this event. Looking forward to getting out and getting an idea of what it can do. Definitely want to start on the easier side though, especially with the stock 90/10 tires.

See everyone there

A little more information about what is available locally near Grant:

The campground is easy to find. The intersection not only has signs for the BBQ Pits but Jerky as well. Very hard to miss. In addition to the BBQ pits they do have a small store which has necessities like snacks, sodas, water, charcoal etc. Typical camp store just a little smaller.

In Bailey there are two full-convenience stores. One Conoco and one Loaf and Jug. The Conoco is 11.5 miles from the campground and the Loaf and Jug is 15 miles. There are several restaurants in town as well.

The BBQ Pits are open from 11 - 7. $10 minimum purchase for credit cards. Stopped there for lunch today and it is very good.

One mile to the east of the campground is the Kenosha Cafe. They are open from 7 - 3 everyday. They have typical rural cafe breakfast items like breakfast burritos, pancakes, french toast, eggs and bacon etc. They also have a full lunch menu they start serving at 11:00.

Hopefully this information helps. I for one have no intention of bringing any kitchen items and will forage locally.

I'll plan on being there Friday and Saturday. I can do a presentation if there's a slot that opens up, but I'm looking forward to the planned shows.

Fires? Just happy I did not drown!

Hi All,

Jim and I had a great time at the Colorado meeting. The campground was great. The company was even better. The afternoon rain showers just settled the dust.

See you all next year. Happy Trails.

Great Gathering

Jacque and I are still telling tails about all the amazing folks we met at this meeting. I am embarrassed that I have not made it to any of these before. Don't forget to friend us on facebook at. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Weste...s/169917899692

Everyone who friends us and puts HU in the response before Sept. 4 2013 will have a chance to win either a one day rental on any of our bikes (Subject to availability) or a free Ghost town and graveyards tour.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
