HU California - ride partner for Usal Rd? (dirt)

Anybody going to the CA Traveller's meeting who'd be interested in meeting up for lunch Thursday in Ft Bragg then riding up Hwy 1 and Usal Rd together?

On my route to the HU Traveller's meeting in Petrolia, CA, I'm planning on doing Hwy 1 out of Ft Bragg heading up to Petrolia. But to add some spice, I plan to continue on Usal Rd (dirt) the rest of the way; about 50 miles of dirt.

I'm going solo, but wouldn't mind a riding partner out of Ft Bragg, as I've not been on that section before.

Meeting up - leaving SF Thursday am

That sounds great, though I'm not 100% sure that timing will work out. I've sent you my contact information by email so we can keep in touch. I'm planning to leave Thursday morning around 10:00 from here in San Francisco. If it turns out I end up somewhere undesirable in the dark or I opt for a fun but longer route I'm okay arriving on Friday after a camp-out along the way. For what it's worth, I ride a KLR650 and am slower than I used to be on my sport/sport touring bikes.

It would be really fantastic to have a riding partner for Usal Road, especially after seeing this particular mini-drama: PR for International Friendship 2009 - Page 51 - ADVrider (summary: solo, foreign rider on Usal Rd. a few days after a rain storm. Slips into ditch from wet clay and can't get heavy bike out despite being unhurt and bike being barely scratched. Walks part way out but triggers Help then 911 button on his SPOT just in case. Emergency services help him out that night, new friend trucks him back in the next day to extricate bike and help him continue on his way. Many people buy SPOT service. SPOT, Inc. gets another anecdote for testimonial page.)

As long as it doesn't rain between now and then it should be okay.

Anyone else from the Bay Area or north/central California?

Daniel

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
