Hi Susan! I have been looking at the Humm event and I had questions about the rider level of experience required. I have a little bit of dirt riding experience on forest service roads and one rocky eroded one.
I have only owned my dual sport since May. Will it be too much for me?

I've done some events like this on blacktop, and this venue looks to be very tempting. Word is out to buddies to form a team. Good job Grand & Susan with the idea!

Canadian Rockies HUMM 2016 from UK

So, after coming third in the Morocco HUMM in 2015 and looking for an excuse to do more trips I am considering the Canadian Rockies HUMM next July.

I can either ship my bike to New York or LA from Heathrow and ride to the HUMM (I have friends/family in Toronto and Banff that I would like to drop in on) and probably spend at least 4 weeks on the road. Initial idea is to fly into NYC then ride up to Toronto, then head west to Calgary for the HUMM before heading south to fly out of LAX (about 5000mls according to Google maps, is that even realistic??) .

Or

Fly direct to Calgary and hire a bike for the HUMM spending less time (a week or two??) and not see so much. But it seems a waste to go all that way and not make the most of it.

I favour the first option, but haven't yet decided.

Anyone else from the UK considering this event? Anyone interested in meeting up somewhere on the way? Anyone interested in forming a team?

Patrick

Hi Brian,

As I have set out the tags for the HUMM in Canada with my friend Trent - I can probably advise you a little.

The tags require offroad riding, but you don't need to do anything scary - there are plenty of points for people to collect that are on smoother trails - or rough trails that you can paddle your way through - no need for speed'

Here you can find more info with pictures of different trails:

If you have further questions, PM me or post something on our facebook page!

Greets,
Daan

Blacktop won't get you into the beautiful nature like this: ;-)

Hope to see you there!

Hi Patrick,

Cool planning - I like it.

I have ridden across this continent and it took me 3 months to see a little bit only - it is very big and very beautiful.

My friend Trent and I are the event partners for the HUMM, and have tried to get that deal nailed down with Air Canada - but it was a dead end ($$$).

If you want to get here for a few weeks, taking your bike is nice as there is a lot to see; I'd personally go to LA then and ride north via the parks which are fantastic, but that is a personal preference.
From Toronto to Calgary, that is 50hrs in the saddle..... you may want to install a throttle lock as it is a lot of prairy. :-D

Rentals: we have made a deal for additional km's and discounts with a local company, you can find pricing and specs on the deal here:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/eve...m-rockies-2016
For the bike rent cost of a 2 week trip you cannot get your bike flown in - and there are a few GS800's with panniers and all available, 650GS or KLR with soft luggage. Also 1200GS available with hard luggage system.

If you guys fly in with a team and rent bikes (which I would find really cool) then I'll get you some tracks and tips for camping, routes, free hot springs in the mountains accessible only by unpaved roads etc so you can make a holiday out of it (free of charge).
I'll just make that for all guests from overseas that want to make a little trip out of it.
You can pretty much bush-camp for free all over the place, as long as you take the bears into account.

You can find all info on the HUMM here:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/eve...m-rockies-2016

More pics and specs of the trails out here on our FB page:

Feel free to post additional questions on our FB page too!

Daan

canadian crossing 2016

Patrick, Dan,
We are two guys (eejits some say?) on KTM990s travelling East to west canada in late August 2016 for 4+ weeks. Starting in Nova Scotia and finishing in Anchorage via Vancouver. Unfortunately we will miss the Canadian Rockies Humm 2016.

Any good suggestions, places to visit, dirt roads to sample, camp areas or advice would be much appreciated.

Kieran

Hi Kieran,

How much time will you spend between Calgary and Vancouver? And which route do you have in mind? I can give you some tips, no problem.

Hello folks, I am registered for the HUMM but unable to attend due to busy life circumstances. Looking for someone who is interested in using my entry. I understand that a substitution is possible.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
