Ontario Canada 2012 HU Travellers Meeting, Barrie, ON, September 20-23 2012
Ontario, Canada 2012 HU Travellers Meeting, Barrie, ON, September 20-23 2012
Full details and Registration open now!
The very FIRST Eastern Canada HU Travellers Meeting, in a great location just north of Toronto, easily accessible to everyone in Ontario, Quebec and NE USA!
We'll have a wide range of topics, so far everything from cooking with locally gathered foods on a Jetboil stove to TWO ways to "do" South America to all about a 15,000km off-road route across Canada!
Please spread the word to your friends, download the poster on the webpage and post it up everywhere!
We are also now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a show, it can be on any bike travel related topic. To help planning the event we need your application forms in early please!
For some more ideas on what YOU COULD present, see the UK Meeting.
We are also looking for volunteers as usual! It takes help from volunteers to put on the meeting and help it all run smoothly. When you register for the event you'll have an opportunity to volunteer, and we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd help out for just a few hours. It's a GREAT way to meet people too!
Mucho thanks to Catharine, Les, Jody and Clinton for making it all happen!
Susan will be there too! I can't make it unfortunately, but I'll be there in spirit!

I had been thinking about going to NC, but might go here now instead. It's an excuse to ride along the north shore of Lake Superior.

While I would certainly encourage you to join us in North Carolina, I can understand the appeal of the north side of Lake Superior. I rode around there a couple of weeks ago, and I was amazed how much it reminded me of parts of Newfoundland -- simply magnificent!

I have almost a week to goof off along the north shore before I get there, and plan on going all the way around the lakes before I get back home.
Road trips are awesome.

Just want to send an update, the event is coming along nice, we have some interesting presenters, and the weather here has been still on the warm side.
just a reminder, this is a open farm so no picnic tables. If your able to pack a folding chair on your bike, you will be all set.

I usually bring a chair anyway. I'm lazy like that.
My 250 blew a gasket and sprays oil all over when it runs. Doesn't look like I can get a new one in before I want to leave, so I'll be on my old touring bike. Its a little larger.
Do you have enough presenters? I like to talk.

Transportation to and fro
My wife and I will be attending this event and will be holding a presentation, or maybe even two! Looking forward to it!
One snag in our plans, we drove our bike into Canada last year with foreign license plates and because I acquired my Ontario motorcycle license am not allowed to drive it... and I seemingly can't register it because the Canadian government feels the bike was not built for the North American market (even though the version that rides around here is the same as mine).
Anyway, we're looking for someone who would be either
- give us a lift from Barrie train station to the site (and/or back)
- give us a lift from Toronto
- even crazier: is anyone hauling a trailer there with space for one extra bike? that way I could still bring the bike and use it for the presentation!
I know it's little crazy, but am hoping to find a solution that wokrs for everyone!
Drop me a line with any questions or offers! Yes, we'll pay for gas!
Thanks

We've sorted our transportation, so are no longer looking for a ride. Thanks for those who helped us!
Looking forward to the weekend! We'll see you all there.

Back in the USA!
Much fun was had, despite rain and chillyness. I took a fair number of pictures and will post up about my trip and the event sometime after I sleep in my own bed.

Thank You to all
Well I will have to say a big Thank You to my special friend Susan Johnson for all the understanding and help. Considering the weather was a tad at times, for the most part the was shining and warm for most canucks.lol
How ever the Aussies and a few from the south felt the cool crisp fall air of the great white north, ( serious there was no snow in the air Ken Duvall)
I like to Thank all the presenters, for a great presentations and ride out. A shout out to the Vendors who came and donated prizes. ( Giant Loop/KLIM/Held/Kriega/Powerlett/Optimate)
I would like to send a big Thank You out to Clinton Smout and his assistant Amanda. With out Clinton we would not have had the land to camp out on.
Amanda is the email guru up at the school. Oh and the girl can ride
The learning curve will be superb for next years event. Which I can pretty much assure it will be in August.
So to all the folks who attended and help make the 1st HU Ontario meeting a success in my books, I say THANK YOU"

I just posted up a (surprisingly long) ride report, over in the ride tales section. You should head over there. Good stuff.
Thanks again for hosting, planning, and all that other stuff so I could show up and slack for the weekend!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
