I really wish I could have been there this weekend to meet Ted. Jupiter's Travels was one of the main inspirations for the big trip I'm on now so I guess I can't really complain too much!

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great time there at the weekend.

I'm the "nugget" who knew which page in "Jupiter's Travels" to open up before passing across the book to Elchico.

I thought webmistress's "nugget" comment was out of order too, by the way. I thought it was quite ironic (funny, in fact) that the offending comment was made when referring to the fact that Ted Simon "resisted the opportunity to ridicule". Hopefully it was just an "off the cuff" remark that was regretted (benefit of the doubt, and all that).

Offended by being called a "nugget" by a girl? Those squaddies must have been really tough blokes in your day - if only those Ivans had known the truth they could have saved all that money they wasted on those big bombs and just got some lovely East German girls to line the Berlin wall shouting not-very-rude names.

Nobody made a fool of you on Saturday, nor here, you did that yourself. As more than one squaddie has been heard to say, if you haven't got a sense of humour you shouldn't have joined.

Here's hoping Ted reads HUBB postings!

Nuggets & assuptions!!
As expected my comment has provoked some lively debate which is always welcome yippee!!!

ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME

You assume I went to university for some strange reason, but thankyou and I am flattered.

I actually had a very brief comprehensive education and was working for the ministry of defence in 1980 as a welder.

I made the Chieftian tanks that men serving queen and country used until we went on to develop the Challanger and Challenger 2.

I did go to Leeds university a couple of times to see some bands does that count?

Lighten up ElChico life is too short and the world is too small.

If it makes you feel better my bike died on the way home due to gearbox failure and its gonna cost me a grand to repair.

Seriously though, here isn't the place to have slagging matches (I'll discuss it offline if anyone wants to talk), but it's also not the place to make potentially offensive comments about people that are likely to be reading. Thats ill timed, at best.

Frinch11, for my part, if anything that I said was interpreted as "ganging up" on webmistess, then I apologise, but I think it's important to defend common courtesy on the HUBB, and thats what I did, but hopefully not in an offensive way. webmistress herself seems quite unperturbed about the whole thing, which I think is a good thing!

And yes, Ted's presentation blew me away. The man knows how to hold a crowd's attention, even if he's not spectacular with a laptop! I think it's because he's so down to earth. Who else would ask for a photo of his audience? His "the microphone may be dead, but I'm not" (while jumping up and scaring the shit out of me) line was just inspiring. I'm absolutely delighted to have met him.

Sorry Phoenix, I cant reply to your PM directly as I'm not considered old enough to be allowed.

I unreservedly apologise for offending you, and for getting on your moobs. To me this was all just about humour, people teasing each other, laughing at themselves and each other, etc.

Of course it all goes wrong if you try it with people who take themselves seriously, as Helga-the-Welda found out to her...er...amusement.

The "I served my country" stuff what pure bullsh*t as any squaddie will tell you - I just called it for what it was!

I'm off to buy a pair of moccasins.....

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
