Bigger fuel tank for KLR650
Has anyone got any experience of these?
I found a 10 gallon from IMS and there is an older thread on the HUBB for a Safari one. Reading on the KLR forums there seems to be some concerns regarding the design (one side running dry and killing the pump).
As someone without much mechanical skill I am resultant to introduce an increased risk of failure into my set up, but think I need to do something to give me more range.
All insights welcomed!

klr 650 IMS tank
I have used the IMS 10 gallon tank on my 2nd gen KLR 650 for several years with good results. The safari tank is smaller and looks completely different. IMS told me it was indestructable! I quickly proved them wrong and it did rupture when I fell off with a small leak, they specified a patch called Marine-tex which is a fast acting epoxy and it did get me home. I carry this product when I ride now. IMS replaced the tank free of charge, and gave me a free shift lever too. I installed Givi crash bars and they fit with no mods! and have saved the tank from several other small off pavement spills. Somewhere somebody has cutaway pics posted of this tank and it was helpful to understand why I only got 15 miles on reserve! I went with the locking gas cap option and run a giant loop tank bag without issue. The internal pump system is interesting, refer to those cutaways pics. I would assume about half of the gas would gravity feed even if the pump fails, it is a Mikuni low pressure vacuum pump and i carry a rebuild kit for it that I bought online. The right side will empty before the left at the last 20% or so but the nature of the low pressure pump leads me to believe that this will not harm it. There is no unused gas!! If you pump has not failed and you run out of gas you are out of gas!! I run an Eagle Mike manual fuel tap and two packages of anti-slosh tank foam blocks and I highly recommend it.

G,day Andy, unless you are heading to oz and doing some outback desert riding, you will not need a safari tank. you will find fuel no problem klr has big enough tank to do what you need, if you need extra fuel, grab cheap 5ltr fuel can save the coin

I agree. Get your KLR running (jetting) and breathing correctly (intake and exhaust), fuel economy should improve a bit. Stock tank is already HUGE ... if you need more, strap on a 2 gallon jug or something. Can't imagine needing more than the 300 mile range the stock KLR tank provides.
With decent (not even good) planning, you should easily work your way from one fuel stop to another. If where you are turns into a Mad Max situation ... well, then you got other problems. You won't be on the Moon. Plan ahead for fuel source.
On the KLR, I would spend money on suspension, rad guards and strengthening weak areas. It's a HEAVY bike anyway ... not wise to add 4 gallons more fuel weight fuel you most likely never need.
