I would look for a completely stock, low miles Gen I ('87 - '07). Then completely go through it to include doohickey, new tires, chain, sprockets, brakes, etc. This will get you familiar with the bike. I plan on taking spare plug, oil filter, clutch and brake lever, water pump seals, front and rear tubes plus stuff to fix flat on the road.

I would buy a Gen2 -- and did. Improved doohicky, heavier forks, Same engine.
I put Progressive monotubes in my forks and an 8kg spring on the back. Keep it under 5000 rpm, keep it full of fresh oil, and it will run indefinately

Not the same engine. Gen IIs all seem to burn oil. Every one on the way to Ushuaia had a gallon jug on back.

Men say, ring/piston redesign in 2008 resulted in excessive oil consumption in SOME '08-'09 models; however, a re-redesign virtually eliminated that problem in subsequent production.

That said, don't doubt many Ushuaia-bound KLRistas had ride-along oil jugs, regardless of machine vintage. Helped outfit/build a Generation 2 just completing a Washington, DC-Florida-Alaska-Tierra del Fuego-Bogota circuit (Wotnext's "Riding Through The Americas" on ADV); no on-board oil jug AFAIK, but . . . a 10-gallon aftermarket fuel tank!

Disclaimer: No dog in the fight, I ride a Generation 1!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
