Glenn is right on. For under 6k dollars you can have a very offorad and onroad capable rtw touring machine perfect for one up riding. However, two up riding is a different story. The klr is too small for two people (unless your real small and travel real light!) . I just ordered a corbin seat and more luggage. A windshield and hpegs are next on my list. Someday ill be ready to go AROUND THE WORLD

Well! The deed is done! Picked up a used KLR 1999, 7400Kms 4500CAN ~2800USD. Just got a little dent in the tank, and the infamous tweet. I'm hoping loosening the 3 drain bolts on the exaust and banging it with a rubber mallet fixes it. Its in the service manual so who knows. Anyone know how many years the blue KLR was produced? Also, any ideas on how to get rid of the tweet? I've heard good things about the stock jetting and altitude, can anyone suggest a good replacement pipe if I can't fix the stock one?

opps, forgot to mention, I'm looking for an exaust where I don't have to change the stock jetting. Prolly need an air filter upgrade too.

I've left my exhaust stock as well as the jetting. If it ain't broke....I did change the air filter though. Got a dual density foam one from Dual Star. I think for rough riding it may be better than a rigid one. If it gets wet you can ring it out and it'll dry quicker.

My experience is 12,000 k thru Africa with a KLR650. Just returned. Mixed 40 degrees and sand thru the desert, with stormy days in the mud and pleasant driving in paved roads. My experience with the bike is very good. No mechanical problems at all, only one flat tyre.
During those 9 weeks I did not need to do nothing to the bike, only some oil once in a while. The water-refrigerator system worked very well, under difficult conditions (heat, load, etc).
A bit of a problem is the tank, only 14 liters. With no wind, quite a big load of luggage, straight road at 120K/h, I could do some 250 k. With wind, 180.
I still love the bike.

Are we riding the same bike? My KLR has a 6 gallon tank. i.e. > 24 litres.

i think some foreign models have different tanks and sometimes plastics.i think they make or made a klr-c or klr-m in canada - little different looking. here in the states the klr has a 6gal (24l). and we ride on roads, not tarmac or tar... hehe -joking.

There are two models in Canada.

KLR650-A and C

One is somewhat more street-oriented than in the US.

The A has a 23 liter tank, longer suspension. The C has a 11.7 liter tank, half inch lower seat height.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
