Touring on a KLX250S

Hi everyone,

I'm a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and I'm going on a motorcycle adventure to meet other survivors and help them live their dreams.

I am going to be riding my KLX250S down, starting with the southern US and possibly parts of Mexico, working my way back up to Canada, where I live. I'm planning on beginning in one month, in January 2014.

I'm wondering about ways to set up the bike... I like lightweight travel, and the KLX250S is a nice light bike... I also want to do some offroad riding, so I don't want to beef it up too much...

I'm going to need some panniers or some way to carry stuff. Can any of you recommend good ones for the KLX250? I shouldn't need to carry too much stuff... my laptop, lightweight bivy sack & down sleeping bag, small camp stove, some clothes, basic tools...

Any suggestions for ways to set up the KLX250 would be appreciated.

Oh, and my website is:
Made To Soar | Helping Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors Live Our Dreams

Cheers,
Mark

Panniers

First of all, good on ya for what you're doing!

I don't have a KLX250 (often wish I did!), but you might check out the Ortlieb roll-top panniers that Aerostich sells. I've had a set dangling on my KLR for about 10 years. Waterproof, durable, and won't break the bank!

Enjoy your travels!

Tom

Thanks, Tom! It's a nice machine from my limited experience with it!!!

Hey, those bags look cool.

Now I have to think about hard vs soft luggage and waterproofing... I was also looking at these:

I'm interested in what you come up with. Will you change the seat? I see you can also get a larger (3 gal) gas tank for this bike.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
