Apologies if this is too obvious a tip: I fit all my spares before I leave, using the tools I carry with me, and carry the replaced parts as my spares (assuming they're in good condition). That way, I know all my spares fit and what tools I need to fit them.
I also carry out my own servicing, so I know how to do it, and then I've only one person to blame if I've messed something up.
