Question what ktm have i got ??????????

hi,
Firstly ive never owned a ktm before so im not familier with the models and specs.
Ive bought (£250) a ktm that had been stolen recovered and witch had never been registered before (police have checked it out). Its got parts missing eg headlight, speedo,and plastics have been brush painted black so i need to know what model and year to buy these parts, ( if anyone can suggest after marked parts to fit instead of orig please do).
Think it might have been raced somewhere as it has 4 extra switches fitted to bars that lead to front wheel (perhaps trip or lap?) and a massive rear shock thatsv remote resevoir (dont think ktm standard fitted remote ones?) and sand tires.
Think its about a 1995/1998 year its a 620cc, got a large fuel tank and fuel pump, no rad fan or temp sensor, supercomp switches and exhaust, large remote resvoir rear shock whitepower, massive forks (not upside down), center stand, no speedo drive fitted to wheel, square steal rear subframe, battery fitted, oil filter fitted to front frame downtube,

Your chassis number (first 14 digits if you don't want to publish it) and engine number might be a pointer. Or you could send them to a helpful KTM dealer (like KTM Sommer) and ask them to identify it.

Is there a bracket welded to the front of the headstock? If so this could be the one for an Adventure or Rallye fairing.

The big tank, fuel pump and lack of speedo drive implies it's either an Adventure or a Rallye.

The remote reservoir rear shock (if it's remote as in the gas reservoir is connected to the shock via a hose) imply it may be a rallye model, as does the competition switchgear. Does it have a key and ignition lock?

Are there any traces of purple plastic? This was one colour used for earlier rallye models (this colour model didn't have a 'full' fairing, just a screen).

If it's an Adventure or Rallye I doubt it was never registered. Could it have been stolen abroad?

Having re-read your post it does sound like a rallye bike to me due to the extra switches. How many oil filters does it have? Does it have one below the carb, but external to the crankcase? How big and where is the battery and how big's the airbox? Does it have electric start?

I'll take this opportunity to state I may have a lot of KTM parts for sale in the near future. Let me know what you think you'll need.

Thanks for the info,
I've just scraped some black paint off the front mudguard and it does look purple underneath it does have an external oil filter under the carb and one on front frame down tube. The battery is very small and is fitted in the top off the airbox. There is no bracket welded to the headstock but theres a large bracket bolted to the top yolk. There is no key,ignition or steering lock on frame.
As for the frame number ive asked at the local ktm dealer (who by the way are very unhelpful from past experience) and they said the number is not recognised by the ktm factory and they have never made such a bike full stop and thats that?,,but then i asked at another dealer and they had trouble working it out but said its probly 1997 rallye or adventurer when i asked why they had trouble, they said its because pre 1999 the ktm factory kept really vague records.
Do you know where i can get a picture of a rallye and what clocks/headlight would be fitted and finally can i fit a fan and sensor to it as i dont like the idea of it not having one..ONCE AGAIN THANKYOU FOR YOUR HELP,,,,,,,,,

Hi,

It sounds like an early rallye bike, known as the 'Lila Kuh' (purple cow), which is quite rare these days (and quite desirable IMHO).

I recall a german-speaking website where there's pictures, something like www.ktm-lc4.net.

I recall there were at least two purple rallye models - one with a large 30L tank (similar to that on the Adventure) and one with a smaller 20 or 18L tank. Both had side tanks as stock but of course these may have been removed from your bike.

The engine number may have a 585 prefix, but I'm not sure about this.

If the large bracket attached to the top yoke is also attached to the bottom one then this is probably the bracket used to mount your instruments which are a roadbook reader and electronic trip/speedometer (ICO I think) and probably some warning lights. You could probably get away with just fitting the speedo with appropriate attachments.

Are you sure there's no temperature thermo-switch for the fan? This should be located at the bottom of the RHS radiator. Fitting a fan shouldn't be a problem.

Let us know how you get on. Sounds like it will be an interesting project.

You might like to give Marsh Performance near Plymouth a call (01752 844456) regarding your parts requirements and for help in identifying the bike as the owner knows LC4s very well and supplies new and used parts.

sounds like a 620 EXC model KTM year 1996 the 97 bikes had electric start and the two oil filters the 96 only got the two oil filters.

Sounds like Hoppo's bike has 3 oil filters - the one in the crankcase below the sprocket, the one screwed onto the bottom of the downtube, and the one below the carb. AFAIK only rally LC4s have 3 oil filters.

Thanks for the pics, the bike i have has not got upside down forks but ive been searching for info on ktm rallye and found out that one model (extreme 97) had wp50 conventional forks which i think mine are, also the extra switches ive got that i thought where added by someone where standard items also fitted to this version of the rallye. but the site i found this info on has no pictures justn parts http://www.ktminfo.com/partscat/Part...0407&CatID=404

I don't like to speculate, but it could be that the 'conventional' forks you have could have been fitted in a later production run for example.

FWIW IMHO the WP 50mm Extremes are the best trail bike forks ever made, perhaps a little too rigid but very plush with the right springs.

If it is a rally bike then you've got something a bit special - albeit in what sounds like poor condition - for not much money.

Apart from building it back to whatever spec you require, of immediate concern is the state of the engine. If I'd bought this bike I'd at least be investigating changing the mainshaft bearing behind the clutch for the later version (if the 'later version' isn't already fitted), renewing the camshaft and cam follower bearings, and rebuilding the water pump. Later on, i will take a look at the engine im still trying to comfirm what should be fitted as standard because im considering trying to put back to standard spec. I will try and find a roadbook and the rest of the cocks/dash.The only things missing is the clocks/dash/headlight/indicators (all switches and 4 wires going to 2 sensors on the wheel are there). Also the engine starts easy and runs very sweet (the throttle response is instant and like if never known).Ive fitted standard plastics to the sides and rear for now but the side fuel tanks in the pics look interesting (also having looked at the fuel lines on the bike last night i noticed that 2 lines sprouting of the main, pointing towards the rear end are capped off).
By the way my brother told me about this site as he like travelling and hes been saying he would like to ride africa next year. Perhaps i could join him on this bike if its finnished.

There's a UK Yahoo group for rallysists (something like 'UKRallyRaid) where used roadbook holders and rally computers etc. come up for sale now and then.

As for the side tanks, good luck. The ones I think you'll need are rarely seen for sale. If I wanted some (again) I'd be looking at the German speaking KTM Adventure/LC4 forums. Do you really need them?

The engine work I mentioned was a safety precaution I took. The mainshaft bearing on my 02 LC4-E was on the verge of collapsing when I had it changed for the later (different) part, and if you search this forum you might find some tales about the cam follower bearings failing. I replaced the camshaft bearings as when the top end was off.

As for using the bike for an Africa trip I've chosen LC4s the couple of times I've ridden there, and I probably would again although there's a new BMW model I quite like!
