Defender Steering boxes?
Time for a new PA steering box and everything else steering related - is Ad West the best to go for? Genuine?
I have an old style one I'm told - 4 bolts or 6 bolts I can't remember - are any of the models better than others.
As with all of my posts this is for fairly extreme trips to remote places in Africa usually alone, so I like to look at the best options available, then work down a little if the prices are too high! ;-p

Adwest is best , and the 4 bolt is the later better option , the price for genuine adwest vary £250 to £650 , gen comes in adwest box , watch out for " OE type" and other vague claims

"4 bolt" or "6 bolt" refers to the number of bolts holding the top plate onto the box. (Classic Range Rovers and some early coil LRs even had a 3 bolt). I think you'll only get 4 bolt boxes new, "new" 6 bolt ones are likely to be rebuilt, which I would avoid at all costs - the seals never last, even if the rest of the innards have some life left. Adwest is fine.
Simon.

OK, Ad West it is - 4 bolt if possible, should be ok. Is there a kit available as I'd like to replace the other steering bit - round thing where the fan belt hooks onto, whatever that is called ;-p
Mines a bit damaged after some rapid crow barring on the Ethiopia/Sudan border area, sadly on the Ethiopia side with 100 screaming kids.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
