If you are looking to buy in the US, then you'll be somewhat limited in your choices due to import restrictions.
I would generally stay away from Land Rovers. I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate from the Land Rover lovers, but truth is...in regards to reliability they just can't match Toyota...even if they do look really awesome!
The Land Cruiser of choice is usually the 75, which is totally badass, but sadly, not in the US. The Hilux's cousin, the Tacoma is a great choice. The main differences between these two is the Hilux has a fully boxed frame, where the Tacoma does not. The Tacoma can support less in the bed, but has a larger towing capacity. Probably the biggest downside for the Tacoma (or upside for the Hilux) is the availability of a turbo diesel for the Hilux.
Anywhere you go in the world, you will have parts availability for Toyota...and people that know how to work on them, so that is a plus.
A lot of it will come down to what you want and what you are willing to work on yourself. There are a lot of great choices out there, but the costs and availability will vary widely.
