Land Rover Fuel Economy & Cost per mile
Hi folks,
We have just completed 48,000km through Europe and Africa (west coast route) and wanted to share some info with you on our fuel economy. Our vehicle is a 1997 300tdi with (now) 175,500 miles on the clock.
It would be good to see the economy others get in their Land Rovers, so please feel free to post here.
We kept a log of all the fuel, mileage etc... the basic data was calculated using the land rover ODO. The corrected data is using the Sat Nav mileage. Somewhere between these numbers is the ball park economy we achieved (circa 28 mpg)
Basic mpg = 29 mpg
Basic km/100l = 1022 km / 100l
Corrected mpg = 27.6
Corrected km/100l = 973 km / 100l
Cost per mile = £0.13
Cost per mile = € 0.14
Cost per mile = ZAR 1.38
We spent a total of £3,707 on fuel at an average cost of £0.75 / litre.
Cheapest fuel was in Angola £0.27 / litre & Western Sahara £0.4 / litre.
Most expensive was UK at £1.22 / litre
We always made a point to fill up when and where we could (100 litre tank), carried at least 1 x 20l spare Jerry can of fuel. We always "tried" to fill up at branded fuel stops and had a sedimentor on our fuel line - this did take out a lot of muck (we cleaned it out once on the trip). Fuel in Nigeria is very dirty and we only ever bought black market fuel once. When we changed the fuel filter it was pretty clean each time.
Look forward to building up a good list here.
Cheers
Nick

UK to Indonesia
Hi guys,
LR 1998 110 300TDi CSW - now with approx 99,500 miles on the clock (incl additional fuel tank - like you we filled up when we could and only used decent fuel stations)
We still have to calculate 55,000 km (34,000 miles) over 13.5 months from UK to Flores (return to Bali) via Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and onto Indonesia. By the time we arrived to Sumatra (by this time 10 months on the road), we had completed 29,061 miles, had spent £3,326 - approx 011.4 pence per mile between 4 of us.
Pence per mile became even cheaper as we travelled throughout Indonesia (a fixed cost of 0.30 pence per litre) where we completed an additional 4,939 miles. But, as yet, have to check the total receipts - in a notebook somewhere. Will get round to completing our final costs shortly.
Hope this helps.
All the best and hope all is going well in SA (you must be well settled by now). We are currently in Oz.

200/300tdi engines benefit greatly having the proper injection pump (VE) timing.
Mine was some 0.05mm off from the perfect, instantly 30% more fuel consumption!!!! (timing belt change not done by the book...)
so...it takes diesel specialist 30min to do, costs some 50e and comes back after 2 full tanks of diesel
mine 8.14 liters /100km

112,000km around Africa, west coast then east coast. With Michelin XZY tyres, a bigger intercooler, an almost newly reconditioned 200 TDI and heavily loaded I got pretty much 100km out of 10 litres. Sometimes almost 110km when it was easy slow driving.
I drive slowly and carefully - I hardly used 5th gear on the whole trip - a lot of 3rd gear!

Hi,
I have recorded mpg on our trips for the last 4 years, normally a month long. On average we have achieved over 28 mpg. Measured over journeys in the 4000 mile region.
What I did notice was that the mpg did not drop much with the addition of a roof tent. I also notice how crap European diesel is. When we left Europe our mpg average increased to circa 32 mpg, due to the reduced bio content.
Our Landy is a 300tdi 110 county, with three travelling and gear to support us.
Cheers
Dan

5851 litres or 1288 gallon doing 34420 miles or 55395 Km.
Odometer mileage we think is under by about 3%
So.
26.72 MPG (Imperial Gallon)
9.4 Km per litre
10.56 litre per 100 Km
Fuel pricing is on our website at www.overlandbirds.com
£4776 on fuel or 81.6 pence per litre average.
7.2 pence per mile which seems low compared to you Nick. We did about 3000 miles in Egypt where fuel is free (almost)

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
