Hi Kev,
30 mpg is very misleading, and is of no help to any one looking to do any sort of long trip.
A reasonably loaded 80 diesel, be it 12 valve, or the later 24 valve, (1993 onwards) isn't going to return much more than 20 mpg on tarmac.
Sure, you may squeeze a few more, but not really practicable.
Get into any sort of off road travel, adn watch the fuel consumption drop to circa. 16 mpg.
The 80 series, loaded to any sort of long distance travel, is going to totally weigh just less than 3 ton's.
Unloaded weight is very close to 2160kg,
