Split rims

I used to run a set of these on my HJ60 but got fed up with multiple punctures. mine were, however, very rusty. Has any one on here experienced new ones, do they still tend to suffer more punctures than a standard rim and tubeless tyre. Although maybe not as necessary with modern puncture repair gear I like the idea of being able to get the tyre off relatively easilly in the field, it means I can carry a second spare tyre rather than a whole wheel.

Does anyone know what sort of price these wheels are new?

cheers

Hey mate, yes we were using the new one and still do in one case (this is for my work). The puncture rate (as always) been very tyre dependent but I would say the rate for the same tyre split rims v normal is still higher. I decided for my personal vehicle to go with a punch-kit. Mainly as it is that much easier and i have been smack by the leaver once to many times and dont like the safety of doing the repair anywhere if i hurt myself i am in trouble. Having said that I am the only one allowed to change my bikes tyres..the levers dont worry me there.. so maybe i am too insane to listen to..

Your puncture rate will not be affected by using split(multipiece) rims unless you dont fit the band that protects the tube from the rim. Punctures are far more dependent on tyre chosen , eg sidewall construction, how much tyre is worn , terrain , and tyre pressures , to mention a few factors HTSH

Incorrect. Punctures on split rims mostly originate from inside due to rust flakes with the tyre still intact but the tube leaking. Only brand new splits work properly but since a split rim is not water tight, rust will soon apprear (again) on the inside of the rim causing the punctures. Kind of a self forfilling prophesy; easy to repair a flat tube but actualy being the cause of many flat tubes.

Cheers,
Noel

yes, it seemed to be rust flakes that caused my problems (I had tyre flaps in place). The rust flakes seem able to work their way round the flaps.

12 on the way to the Gambia and back!! Although I had plenty of spare tubes and got repairs done on the way it was still a pain!

So, it looks like splitties are fine in somewhere like oz or the desert, but once I return to the dryer climes of the UK I'm stuffed again! Looks like it's gonna be a set of six steel modular then!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
