Hi there,
We are just back from our M/E trip and we changed euros by our entry at the border. The rates at the border and inner country are as follows:
EUR/SYP=65.00
USD/SYP=46.00
Petrol=40 SYP
For the country exit you have to pay 250 SYP-tourist fee.
Regards,
Simon

SYP 500 for leaving Syria
Hi Rinus,
I recently crossed the border again to Syria and out. The currency issue is really funny. As you know you can get visa at the border (for Germans it is USD 32.00). I had the equivalent sum in SYP but they were not accepted. I had to change good money and went with the bank receipt to the police officer again. Then I had to buy insurance for the motorbike they only accepted USD. After I changed I went with the SYP and the receipt to the insurance office. The customers again, wanted a fee of 8 USD, guess what... right again to the bank, change money and back to the customs with SYP and receipt again.
The way out you have to pay the exit tax of SYP 500 (mid of October) in local currency since this is usually sold at a local kiosk.
Have a nice trip to Syria and enjoy arabic socialism,
Lalli

Hallo lalli,
It sounds like I better have enough $ with me.
Does it make any differance if you've got euro's or dollars with you?
You also said that you had to buy insurance at the border. Is this instead of a carnet? and if so how much is such an insurance?
And as I'm planning on staying in Syria for three to four weeks, would a visa and insurance bought at the border alow me to stay for that long?
And Lalli, I'm a verry patient man I think I'll fit in pretty well overthere.
thanks Rinus

Following this thread with interest, since I'm intending to visit Syria, Jordan and Iran next year. I'm about to start working out the price of a carnet, but if it is possible to get across without one, I will try that. It depends which is cheaper - the carnet or the 'bribe' necessary without a carnet.
If it is just a matter of time spent hanging around trying to get across without a carnet that will not be a problem.
Must remember to take some USD.
Rinus - let us know how you get on next spring.
