Morning folk,

This may seem tame considering the subjects usually found on these forums but would any of you kind folk know of a decent 4x4 hire company in Jordan?

I've done the usual searches and only found the default hire companies, I'm after a reliable 4x4 and not a people carrier or "fake 4x4", something with a fixed diff? lanny perhaps? That would be preferable or a land cruiser? It'll be this winter so not so bothered out air con or am I being naive

I don't think you'll find much info on here, given that this forum is mostly catering to motorcycle travellers and a minority of 4x4 travellers.

I would try the Jordan section of the Tripadvisor Middle East Forum, which is very active.

Ok great, thanks for the tip. I posted here because I know peeps with full on travel knowledge, be it by bike or car, would be able to advise, I fear trip advisor will again be all the normal car hire companies and not the knocked about lanny hire I'm after.

Welcome - this site caters to people generally travelling with their own vehicles and due to overland access restrictions that has seen the bottom fall out of Middle East activity for us.

Hiring a 4x4 is probably not unusual in Jordan, every tourist wants to go to Wadi Rum after all. I don't know what a 'Lanny' is (I would guess Land Rover but you said you wanted something reliable...) but Toyota rules in the Middle East with other Japanese marques such as Nissan and Mitsubishi after that. If by 'fixed diff' you mean axle diff locks then you may be in for quite a search - diff locks are useless in sand so probably not common there. If you are in Jordan in winter you certainly won't need aircon - a heater would be nice though.

Years ago I hired a Corolla in Jordan, it had 115,000 kms on and was so beat up the hire car guys didn't charge anything extra for a damage waiver. So maybe you'll be in luck finding a beater.

There are local Jordanians on the Tripadvisor forum who may be able to help you with your request. Obviously it's unusual to hire an old car and an old car which someone is willing to rent out to you is unlikely to be reliable in my opinion.

Although saying that I have used the fixed diff in many situations including sand, and in combat situations which put somewhat of a certain amount if urgency.

Anyway I've been given more info on this thread than I would ever have been given on trip advisor

Sorry, I probably came off more abrasive than I meant to be and probably overstepped my remit on the diff-lock. I've never driven in sand with one but I'm currently building a Landcruiser overlander with sand in mind and all the research I did on using diff-locks in sand was that they gave no real advantage, if you are correctly set up to drive on sand (low tyre pressure, not too aggressive tyre tread etc). Saying they give no advantage is probably more accurate than saying they are useless.

Yes, I was surprised too. But for questions such as yours, locals are in a far better position to answer. This forum (the HUBB) is great for general knowledge as a lot of people have a lot of travel experience, but you'll not find much recent info on here for the Middle East. It's mostly old guys stuck at home reminiscing about their days travelling!

I am currently planning a bit of a Middle East lap and the Tripadvisor forum has been very useful, for example there are a few accounts of the first travellers flying into Iraq and travelling on the new tourist visas (not available at land borders), locals who can tell me when the Iraq - Jordan and Jordan - Syria borders reopened, accounts of people using the Lebanon - Turkey ferry, recommendations for Syrian travel agencies to get a tourist visa. You'll never find that on here! Overlanders often make the longest and in my opinion most memorable trips, but they are seldom the most adventurous.
