From the fco website Iran entry;

"If you wish to drive your own vehicle into Iran you may be subject to Iranian customs and other regulations. There are particular requirements for travelers wishing to bring motorcycles into the country. We recommend that you contact the Iranian Embassy: for details well before you travel."


Anyone know what the "particular requirements" mentioned on the fco website are?

I suspect its referring to the 'Carnet De Passage' which is basically a passport for your vehicle that gets a stamp in and out of the country to prove you have not sold it there which would incur heavy import duties to be paid.

I have a feeling that there is an engine capacity limit in Iran - don't know what it is, but probably smaller than all the bikes we ride. This is probably the origin of the comment. Or it may be just a standard addition regarding the complicated extras of motorcycles (helmets, sidecars, trailers etc) that is tacked on in order to cover themselves.

Fear not though, none applies to bikes coming in on a carnet.

Hi Guys

1-First of all you all need to get your insurance , bike papers, Carne and INt driving license with you when entering Iran .
2- You all need a visa be it a tourist or transit . Do not leave it to last few days before you be at the border. try to get your visa arrangements done well ahead of time and by that i mean you got to have your visa in your passport weeks before you even get to the border. The iranian tourist visa has a 90 days validity , so if you are planning to cross iran in 5, 7 or even 30 days, it would not hurt to get your visa in tour passport 1 month before heading towards iran.
3- You all need Carne De Passage. Dont count on exceptions and chance to get one at the border. You need to have it all done and ready before getting to border.
4-There is not limitation of engine capacity for you folks , but Iranian citizens can not own bike bigger that 250cc.
5- Attention- iranians are in love with big bikes, since the dont have it (like freedom that they dont have!!). SO you are going to see sworms of younger kids circulating your bike , wherever you stop. That is just out of curiosity. Saying that , it dos not mean you should leave your bike sitting some where at some obscure place and hoping nothing happens. well it is going to, like anywhere else in the world.
Once is saw some totally pissed of german guys whose cloths were ripped of at persepolis near shiraz , while they had left their bike OUT of parking place to go visit persepolis and it happened that they had lost cloths that they needed for the part in Nepal. So dont make this kind of mistakes. Leave your bike in a secure Parking place . it is worth it.
6- Gas- Iranins are still enjoying dirt cheap gas but you folks might have to cough up few more pennies that they do, but still the gas price is cheaper than bottled water!!
7- Money- Have cash with you. There is not single place in Iran that you can use your credit card, debit card, travel check ...etc . only cash . Bring what you need in cash and exchange it as you go. go to banks to exchange . the exchange rate is around 9000 iranian rials for each us $ .
