Right Hand Drive Cars in Oman

According to the Embassy of Oman in London, there is no way I can enter Oman in a right hand drive vehicle. Does anyone know if this is true? Does it apply to people transiting the country? Is there any way around it? Are the border guards open to a bit of Baksheesh?

Alternatively, with my own car, a Carnet de Passages, and a Yemeni Visa, do I have any chance of getting a Saudi transit visa to drive from UAE to Yemen?

Thanks

Daniel

Thumbs down

We've had this question before and I'm afraid nobody has been able to answer it. From UAE there are several crossings into Oman, so there is a chance that if they inspect your car and turn you back you may be able to cross at another point. The borders are quite busy, so you might slip through. If you intend to come back from Yemen the checks there are very thorough. They made me unpack almost every bit of luggage.

Don't even think about trying to bribe anybody in Oman.

Your chances of getting any type of visa for Saudi are very close to zero, unless you are going to work there.

My plan is to cross Oman to Yemen, then take a ferry to Djibouti, so if I got in, I can't see there being any problems. Will probably give it a go, with a bit of luck by October 2008 someone should have tried it already, or the laws may change ??

Thanks

Daniel

Djibouti Ferry?

Daniel,

Just to help you prepare for this trip. There is no such thing as a ferry from Yemen to Djibouti!!! There are some small boats going from Al Makha to Djibouti but I only just got my bike aboard let alone a vehicle? There was a larger boat with an onboard crane but this was good for 600kg only. And the agent for this company would not allow my bike on the boat anyway. Even with some extra!

So for now forget about it. But I have heard talk that they may build a bridge over the red sea here but you won't see that for at least 10 yrs!! Anyone else heard of this??

Cheers
Ivan
