Hi Joe,
nice of you. I was there 2 years ago, had a blast. How's the situation nowadays, especially the coastal road to Oman and the Hadramout valley ?

Cheers,
Laurent

In all honesty the security situation is pooh. Unless you're coming in from Djibouti the east of the country is too risky at the moment; and i'm a risk taker. I'd be surprised if you can still get through from Oman. The coast road is a basket case at the moment.

I would totally agree with Joe:

If you come in from Saudi Arabia on the coast road you might be able to get further south along the coast road to Mokha and ship to Djibouti from there.

But then there are the pirates who have come a lot further north into the Red Sea now. It is quite a risk and unless you are a hundred per cent sure that you find a captain whom you can perfectly trust not to strike a deal with the pirates you should think twice before going on a Dhow with the bike!

Coming from Oman you might be able to reach the Hadramaut unharmed, but the way further west is basically off limits! The only option would be the coast road to Aden. There is no way to go from Shibam directly to Sana'a. The way from Shibam southward to Mukalla is highly dangerous! On the coast westward the security forces might not let you cross through uncertain territory between Mukalla and Aden, at least not without a police or military escort. And lastly, the road north from Aden to Sana'a is certainly also not without risks.

All in all: I am sure it is not worth all the risk-taking right now!

Greetings
Achim

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
