It's been a while sinche I went to Morocco. Last time the green card I got through my Norwegian insurance company offerred liability in Morocco. For my own bike I was self-insurer - because it was a dirt cheap Vespa that few would want to steal (in adition to low monetary and utility value, it was also a shit poor getaway ride with poor reliability, slightly under 12hp, 10" wheels, loaded heavy, and with mechanics that made it difficult to operate for anyone that has never ridden one before - and it was a bike that turned heads).

Problem now is that my previous insurance company does no longer have a colaboration with Morocco, and few (if any) in Norway still does. I assume buying at the border is a possibility for the reliability part, but what about teft or damage to own bike (hull insurance)? My next trip will be on a bike that will cost a lot more - I would like coverage for my bike and equipment.

Are there any reliable insurance companies that offer such coverage, if only for a short duration?

I think you'll be able to buy third party insurance at the border, or close by.

But comprehensive insurance, I doubt. Certainly without spending a lot of money. But expect the risk of theft at least is far less than at home. That's certainly the case in the UK!

Anything can be insured for anything, but the cost of such cover for a simple trip to Morocco makes it unviable for regular travellers.

Theft of the whole machine in Morocco is extremely rare; stealing bits off the bike if left unattended is the same as anywhere. I use a cover if left on the street.

Just about all hotels in the south will let you wheel the bike inside or put it in a nearby lockup. Or have a guardian.

I usually travel there on my own , and leaving a solitary bike is asking for a bit of trouble !
Havind said that ............. i have never had a problem !
BUT as soon as i arrive at a new hotel i allways ask where can i put my bike !
So far
1.... in my bed room
2... in hotel reception
3 ... in hotel cafe
4 ... in phone booth
5...In shop
even parked in a garage once !!!

My argument is: How often is it actually left on it's own? (I'm not specifically taking of Morocco). Quite rare usually, typically in a town for a short period going into a shop, or visiting something. I feel hotels usually know the score wherever they advise you leave it.

Most hotels/guesthouses have either parking behind a big locked gate or a guardian.
We have stayed in a small riad that had neither so we chained the bikes together - but it was in the middle of nowhere, about half a mile down a dirt track so it felt pretty safe.

I must admit to feeling uneasy whenever I've left my bike unattended or out of sight for any length of time in Morocco. Overnighting in hotels is the obvious one but also going sightseeing or even having lunch in a restaurant where I can't see it from the table. But the reality is that I've never had any problems, even in places where I was certain it wouldn't be there the next morning. So in practice the fear of crime has been greater than any actual crime.

That doesn't stop the apprehension though and that can spoil what is otherwise a very pleasant place to be. I'm sure some hoteliers are aware of it and do what they can to put people's minds at ease. Like others we've had them insist we bring the bikes into the reception area and one even had someone sleep under the bikes overnight as a security measure. We came down the next morning to find him still asleep. That contrasts with the sense of security I felt in a hotel in Spain where we were told they had a secure compound and an all night guard. Next morning all our luggage had been forced open and a load of stuff taken. The guard had seen 'nothing'. The difference I suppose is that theft in Spain was covered by our travel insurance whereas in Morocco it wasn't. I'd prefer not to have things stolen at all but if they are then having it done where you can get someone else to pay is the better option.

When we found ourselves in a similar situation in a hotel in Las Vegas a few years ago paranoia kicked in and I sought out the guard and gave him $20 'for your kids' to keep an eye on the bikes.

I'm actually less worried about having the bike stolen than me wrecking it - though I worry about both... a bit. If I was to travel further south than Morocco, I'm quite certain that comprehensive insurance would be impossible to find - and I would be ok with it. But if I could get it for a three week trip arround Morocco, I would probably get it. With bike and all the other stuff probably adding up to 25K, good insurance would be nice. On my last trip my stuff only ran a fifth of that, and I had no worries being self insured.
