Moroccan Currency
Is it possible to get Moroccan currency before you're in the country or do you had to exchange it once you're through the port??
Thanks

Moroccan currency
It's a closed currency so in theory you shouldn't be able to get it outside the country. Having said that you'll probably find a bureau de change that will sell you some but you'll get a really terrible rate.
Just change it at the bank on the border at Tanger Med or use the cash machine or bank in the terminal building.
You'll need Moroccan cash if you're buying vehicle insurance at the border.
Happy trails,
Peter

Thanks Peter. Are there plenty of cash points? And do most/all hotels and auberges take plastic? Maybe I was being näive as I had thoughts of taking a wad of cash and changing it at the border if I couldn't get it before hand. :confused1:

From my experience all the major cities will have ATMs.
Don't count on all towns having them. Villages wont have them.
Major hotels in main cities will take cards (particularly the expensive ones). Campsites around 4-5 major cities may take them, all others eork on cash.
Most Auberge's outside cities won't take them - although more and more do every month.
Fuel stations are more likely to take cash than cards.
Get cash at Tanger Med and where you can in major towns. Much easier than assuming you can use cards.

We exchanged Dirhams for euros at Gibraltar so you should be able to get Dirhams there, having said that we had no issues using atm's throughout Morocco as most of the larger towns have them and many smaller ones too. We also paid for some stuff with euros when we were caught short and the locals seemed happy enough to take them

Try going on ebay to buy cah before you go, lots more people are going to Morocco now, and come back with cash. Might give you enough to get you to the first ATM, pplus you can get a good deal sometimes on the exchange rate. You will need cash if you are going on the motorway network.
ATMs are all over the country, but you tend to be limited to taking out 2000 dirhams at a time. The fees charged are for each transaction, so take out larger lumps if you can as it saves on transaction fees.

Don't know about other ports, but at Tangier Ville port there is a bureau de change on the right 100m before the exit gates to the port - they have a cash machine.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
