Hi all, just thought I'd share my experience today... may or may not be some info you would find useful, for the crossing via Algecarias:
I booked a ticket online close to when I got to the port, making it 2 hours as I arrive before the sailing and ended up watching the earlier ferry by an hour being checked in, I always go safe. Note this was a one way ticket only, no open return, not sure if I got lucky or not as I now it's been said around having an open return.
Follow Port sings when you get near Algecarias, and then you'll see 'Tanger' signs, follow this to a small booth, show your ticket, for me I showed a screen shot of my booking on the phone and got sent to line up.
Go through ferry line check in, you then get stamped out at the next check.
On board, I went straight to reception - note I went with Balearia, got the passport check form and asked where passport control was... waited a while for someone to turn up, but got it sorted when they did.
Tangier Med side, roll off, show passport to first guy, follow exit signs all the way to customs, this is where you get your temporary import, they will want V5 and passport.
After that go through to exit customs compound, insurance booth is the last in the line, he also now sells SIM cards as so many people kept asking.
For currency exchange, if you have a card only, you need to use an ATM, they limit how much you can withdraw at a time, I tried one which was 2000 dh limit and one that let me get 4000 dh. If you want to see a person, the only manned booth was cash only.
Anyway, hope this helps

Oh and if you head on the N2 to Chefchaouen, there are roadworks which if coming from the North start with dirt on a corner, this happens in a couple of places so be careful! (Especially if riding at night due to a delayed ferry...
