Planning a trip for Jan/Feb - any suggestions for places/routes not to miss?

We are hoping to visit Morocco this January/February for around 4 weeks. We have a kitted out Defender and have spent a few years traveling through Africa so I am relatively comfortable on vehicle prep, borders etc.

I have just taken delivery of Mr Scott's Morocco Overland (already have Sahara Overland), a Rough Guide and Michelin maps and am about to get down to the nitty gritty of planning. However, before I do I wanted to ask the Morocco fundis out there for any suggestions of special/favourite places/routes to include in an itinerary - particularly for this time of year.

Looking for fantastic scenery first and foremost and where possible would much prefer wild camping. Tend to gravitate towards the roads less traveled. Not into hardcore routes for their own sake. Would rather cover an area slowly and well than rush to see it all.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi!

I will also visiting Morocco in same period, with pretty much same set up and intentions

Trying to get the best out of the weather from Tangier we'll head down to the MS Routes area, spending a couple of days in Marrakech and stopping in Fes on the way back.

Any suggestion is welcome, thanks.

Ciao & Happy Holidays Season!

Do not miss:

The Algerian boarder between M'mamid and Goulimine, The Tizi'n Test (almond trees should be blooming) If you e-mail me I have some GPS points for a little detour in that area. (nopain@nobrain.ch)

The Khenifiss natural reserve, (Hope the oil tanker stranded in Tan Tan hasn't poisoned it by then) The beach stretch with its sand dunes between Inzgane and Corniche Aglou,

Essaouira, my favourite city in Morocco (I recommend the Hotel Villa Maroc in the medina if you can and want to afford it, it's a beauty)

The "Dar Timgrad" on the hill above Mirleft, Grafitti art, good food on preorder and "Aperitif" with the frenchman and his dog.

Actually in Morocco you can't really go wrong... It's pretty scenery everywhere and people are nice.

Thanks Samy!

Yes, it looks like Morocco has so much to offer and can't wait to leave...one more week to departure :-)

I only have 14 days in Morocco hope it will be enough to taste it.

Ciao!

Samy, thanks. Some of those sound intriguing! I'll email you for those waypoints.

Mauro, I just saw your message. Unfortunately we'll miss you as we won't be heading off until early February. I hope you have a fantastic trip.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
