Question Gallipoli 100 years ANZAC

I am very new to this so please forgive mistakes.
In 2015, April 25th will mark the 100th commemoration of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. Does anyone know of any groups planning to ride from Australia to Gallipoli in 2015? I would dearly love to get involved but lack the skills to orgasnise such an event.

Our club will again organise a good program for Anzac Visitors that will include visiting İstanbul by bikes...
When time is closer, we will send you the ctatalog for 2015...
Best wishes...

Hi dave

There will be a heap of interest in this as we get nearer and I wonder if its time to get admin to sort out a separate Hubb site for it? How do you go about it

cheers :freezing

Gallipoli 2015

Good to see that this is gaining some momentum. I like the idea of a common thread for this as it looks like people could be arriving from several directions and by different means. I'm in Japan at the moment but could be anywhere come March/April 2015 and it would be good to be able to connect with other ANZAC riders in my local at the time to ride to ANZAC Cove in company.

No problem, you did fine! Question is, do you want to go on a tour where someone does it all for you - or do you want to be part of a group of HUers for instance who organise it together and just go and do your thing?

I suspect there will be several tour companies offering tours, and that's a great way to go for many reasons.

There will also be people who'd just like to meet up somewhere and ride together and be there on the day. Should be a great day.

Rentals in Turkey will be at a premium for those who want to fly in and rent, so book your bike early!

Also Zeki has said the "Istanbul Bisiklet Motosiklet" club will be doing lots for the event. They're a great group and I'm sure they'll do a terrific job of organising it all.

It could be a separate forum, and yes we could do that if it seems necessary. For now let's see how this thread goes, let people know about it, and we can always promote it to a new forum if necessary. (Though I'd rather not for all sorts of search and legacy reasons). We can also just keep this thread going, perhaps another one or two as well as needed for appropriate subjects, and we can make them sticky too. As long as people give new threads good subjects this is as good a place as any. All one place and lots of other viewers already without having to send them anywhere new / different confusing.

Pass the word around, and let's see what we can make happen!

I am a bit unsure about this, but I heard that this year the peninsular was closed off to normal traffic and only tour buses were allowed through, unless there was booked accomodation at the hotels there.

Craig Idema mentioned this to me when I tried to arrive at this years, but I was two days late anyway

Maybe Mehmet can advise on what is allowed during the ceromony times, I know he goes by bus from Istanbul

Cheers

Gallipoli

I would like to do a trip to Gallipoli to pay respects and especially to the 1st World War Submariners who took part and won VC's.

Unfortunately due to work commitments I would not be able to visit until the August. Are any bikers out there going to be doing any trips out there during August 2015 or will it all be over and done with after the April event and so nothing to go for?? Any interest anyone

There is a limit as to the number of people who can be there at once. The official services are limited to I think 15,000 people.. the Australians are having a ballot to determine who can go, the ballot is now closed but yet to be drawn. The memorials, graves and scenery will still be there... and I think I'd prefer less people, so I think you'd find it moving when ever you go. I don't know how much you'd find about the sub activities there .. might be more off the peninsular?

You can read the official Australian history - available as PDFs from First World War Official Histories | Australian War Memorial, it is a dry read though. the NZ history - unofficial is available as a PDF https://ia600202.us.archive.org/3/it...00waituoft.pdf

I've put some details on the OSM map for the area.
http://www.maposmatic.org/results//1...23-56_Gal1.pdf (360kb) I'm waiting on copyright approval from the Australian War Memorial to put up the Turkish names .. and possibly some more details contained in their documents.

I heard that there are limited spaces/allowed ticket for next years ANZAC ceremony at Gallipoli. Not sure if true or not. I know of several Australian riders riding from London to turkey for the event.

One Aussie heading that way by bike, currently planning on arrival in Turkey mid March. I didn't enter the ballot for tickets to dawn service, so won't be hanging around for ANZAC day. But I can dawdle through S.E.Asia to tag along with a group heading east to west through China if anyone's planning on going that way.
Please contact me by Sept 2014 so I can obtain appropriate paperwork.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
