i did'nt use the link provided but another one
Garmin: WebUpdater for Windows Updates & Downloads
it was failing because i did'nt download the additional software at the end which i did'nt understand! DOH! (it had a funny name)(my excuse)
apparently i'm not the only one to have had this problem and the reason given is a power surge which wipes out the gps software! i think i can relate to this as it happened after starting the bike and pulling away from the house. my battery needs changing and was probably low on power when i hit the start button draining it even more and then a sudden surge of power when it fired up.
but all ends well and thanks to everyone concerned.
ps- hope my links work and this helps someone in the future.
