Hi,
well I have done a trip in south america for 4 months crossing the andes several times between Chile and Argetnina as well as in Peru and Bolivia, in areas where you would not find your way just with a map.
Anyway, I have just had an old GPS III Puls from Garmin and it was enough to find my way easily. So do not invest too much money in a incredibly expensive GPS. You might need that money elsewhere. I was completely satisfied with my GPS, beeing able to read out the cooridantes and backcheckmy position on the paper map I had with me. So I found all the routes I wanted.
all the best and have a nice trip
