GPS failure - need replacement in RIM or Mali
Our GPS receiver, a Garmin GPS 10, failed. In plain desert even, luckily we carried an old (very old!) etrex to get us back to civilisation.
As we are very dependent on our GPS for our trans Africa we would like to get this replaced (it's still under warranty, but hard to get support here). Problem is: I have been to about every shop in Nouakchott, but none has ever heard of the GPS10. Nor do they have any similar product from other brands.
Anybody has any idea how I can get this replaced? Any adresses?
Garmin support is excellent in not replying to any queries by the way. The Distributor for Garmin in RIM listed on the Garmin website is a dodgy little shop in the old medina. They sell some cheap perfumes and one 14" color TV, but nothing that is even GPS related. The guy in the shop told me there is another shop in the artisanal fishing harbour, but that shop does not have an address. And I failed to locate it.
We can manage for now with the old etrex, so replacing it in Bamako is an option. I am looking in buying it online in Europe or the US and shipping it. But this will take a long time and is a very costly operation. Alternatives are welcomed!
Any hints welcome.
Thanks,
Frederik
