Indian roadmaps
Well, I hope this question doesn't cause too many belly laughs, but...I'm going to buy a bike in India next trip and am wondering how to get around. Not just India, but probably Ladahk, Nepal, and so on. Are there road maps that are any good? If not how do you get from here to there??? All info greatly appreciated. Thanks, all. Charles

Hi Charles,
You can get a travel road atles of India and Bangladesh from Lonely Planet publishers, Its good but doesnt have closeups of towns etc.
Remember when asking the way, people in India tell you, even if they havent a clue !!! Good luck...

"Is town such-and-such this way?"
Nods and smiles: "Yes."
"But I thought such-and-such was *that* way?"
Nods and smiles: "Yes."
"So which way to such-and-such?"
Nods and smiles: "Yes."

Hi Charles,
Lonely Planet has some great books with Maps of India. You could also check the website http://www.mapsofindia.com for road maps for all indian states and cities. Click on Road Companions on the Home Page.
You could also see http://www.wiaa.net, they are the official driving club of india and if you visit their offices in major cities in India, they will give you a detailed route plan for just Rs.10/- (About 20 american cents), very cheap & reliable.
Hopr this helps! Happy Riding !

You can get good maps and map books at a fraction of the cost of the LP books from several booksellers in Conaught Place in Delhi. The red covered 'Discover India' series are excellent value at 40 rupees [US$1] and there is a series of road atlases available for 50 rupees which have good city maps.

HI All,
For Maps of India / Pakistan region , If you are planning from your Home town you can download very very detailed maps from this location!
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/india/250k.html
These maps are way too big in size and at times the geographic details make it difficult to read but still this is the best downloadable map available according to me. Except of course Google earth ! :-)

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
