Knackered GPS?

I've had a Garmin 3+ for the last four years. It's permanently attached to the bike and gets used whenever I use the bike. Yesterday a couple of clear and black horizontal lines appeared on the screen. Today more and more lines appeared and now it's useless. Could this be a problem with the power lead or is an internal problem?

Two years ago mine did the same. It did it right after I dropped it while hiking. I waited for several weeks for it to clear up, but it never did. I sent it to Garmin and they made it good as new for $100 USD. They even replaced the glass screen which I had scratched earlier and updated the software in it. It took about 2 weeks, including shipping within the US. Check their website, they have "flat rate" repair prices there. They'll fix anything wrong with it for one price.

Hi, thanks for that. I haven't dropped it, but I guess it's had a pretty hard life. I'll check out the site, thanks. Bob

Made equiries with Garmin UK. As 'Bobkat' says, they will repair anything thats wrong with the unit for a fixed price of £104, which sound pretty good to me. However, as mine was an old unit I decided to get a more up to date model. Having looked at all that's available I decided on a Garmin gps v, as this unit does more than I need and will fit into the bracket I already have on the bike. I didn't realise how much GPS systems had advanced and how cheap they had become. The 3+ cost me over £400 five years ago and the v £260 today.

I upgraded too, but sold my repaired III+ for over half the cost of the V. If you liked the III+ you'll love the V. I also have the StreetPilot. I like the larger color screen but it lacks the ability to set what you want displayed on the screen. You're stuck with the factory presets (unlike the V which you can set yourself). Sometimes I have both running at the same time (I have mounts for both on the bike).

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
