Question Mapsource - Worldmap

I have the Garmin Quest unit preloaded with the European basemap. I have just purchased the Mapsource Worldmap but am having some problems with it.

Trying to pre plan a route on my computer using the Mapsource Worldmap but it only does a route 'as the crow flies'. Spoke to representives at Garmin and apparently the worldmap doesnt support routing using roads and only does 'as the crow flies'. The worldmap has an edit preferences section where u can choose between 'as the crow flies' and using road routing but it still only does 'as the crow flies' even if you select road routing.

I would be grateful if anyone can give me a heads up on how I can get around this problem.

Kind regards and ride safe

Hi,

I think "as the crow flies is it"
You have to use the old fashioned method, using waypoints and route.
Then at any time, you will get your position and that of your waypoint/destination. From that you will know where you are.

Buy a good map as backup.

World map does not do routing.
For routing atomatically you 'll need to buy (for a lot more money) a City Navigator product for where you'll be (if it exists).
For manually routing then your going to be busy doing waypoints and stuff. Not that world map .. well it is a guide .. roads may have changed since it was done .. buy a local paper map if you can ..

Perhaps if you let 'us' know wher your headed 'we' could be of more specific help?

World map

Hi

Thought I would a few points to the thread.............

You can make a route to navigate with using the Map Source Software and world map by drawing out the route with the way point tool, bit a dot to dot drawing. Its a little tedious and only good if you plan to go on more major routes as the world map does not list smaller roads. However, its a little more helpful than a simple as the crow flies route.

The previous post is right about auto route guidence. You do need to buy extra detailed software products to allow auto routing and navigation along the lines of Tom Tom and more expensive built in units you might find in BMW, Volvo Audi etc.....

In the end, a hand held unit like the Garmin 60 CSX for example is very versitile and allows you to use both world map, Tracks 4 Africa and a host of other mapping products like the UK OS map series and marine maps. At the end of the day, the "as the crow flies" route is useful for an very high level view of the general direction and heading on a trip. Useful when combined with a paper map but not what I would 100% rely on in a true 4x4 off road scenario in a desert or piste in the mountains for example.

HTH

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
